San Antonio Vies for National Vaccine Facility

Community leaders are working to establish the National Vaccine Facility in San Antonio. Currently, the three location choices for such a facility are Pine Bluff, Arkansas, a Maryland suburb of Washington, D.C., and San Antonio, Texas. San Antonio, however, has assets already in place such as: commitment and community support, site location, security issues, scientific and technical expertise, trained workforce and work ethic, and infrastructure. While Congress has approved a design and plan to be made for the facility, it has yet to allocate funding toward the project. Meanwhile, San Antonio is getting ready for the funding to come through and for it to host the over $1 billion facility by obtaining political support and courting a pharmaceutical vaccines business partner.  Read the white paper

TEKSA-IBDC Technology Business Alliance

TEKSA Innovations and the International Business Development Center (IBDC) of the Free Trade Alliance San Antonio have teamed up in a strategic partnership for global technology business development. The IBDC has developed a program that provides facilities and value-added support services designed to assist entry of small and medium sized companies into the U.S. Market. The program's objective is to help companies test their product's market potential in the U.S. without having to make a sizeable investment.

The IBDC Program is managed and operated by the Free Trade Alliance San Antonio in cooperation with other area organizations including the Greater Kelly Development Authority, the City of San Antonio, and the International Trade Center at the University of Texas at San Antonio. In conjunction with its partners, the IBDC can assist in the bi-directional increase in trade between countries and help promote projects of mutual benefit for the enhancement of economic development. Through the TEKSA-IBDC partnership, companies will gain access and guidance to special facilities, excellent resources, and valuable services.

Partnerships for Innovation Grant

The National Science Foundation "Partnerships for Innovation" participants have completed the first half of the two-year grant. Students from the Edgewood school district in San Antonio learned computer applications as well as the basics of website building and design from Our Lady of the Lake University professors and e-commerce students. The program has succeeded in changing how students view themselves and their capabilities in addition to changing their minds about future careers in the technology industry.

At this point, TEKSA client companies Probetex and Market Technologies, and corporate partner INCELL, have benefited from the student participation with the creation of their new websites. Next summer, a new group of students will assist seven more TEKSA client companies by building their websites.  This summer's participating companies are: EZ InfoSource, Adamantium Technologies, Digital Munitions, NanoAppls, Hydro Clean, and ImmunoResources. Look for links to these companies' new student-built websites on the TEKSA website at the end of the summer.

TEKSA and IBM Join Forces

TEKSA Innovations is the newest member of IBM's Incubator Series Program, an initiative that focuses on teaming with leading incubators, giving them access to the latest scalable technology, financing options and solutions guidance.

"We are pleased to be working with IBM because it has a global reputation as a technology leader, and its experience will aid the development of our Portfolio Companies," said Dr. Mary Pat Moyer, president and CEO of TEKSA Innovations Corp.

In addition to TEKSA providing business support, expert business and technical advisory teams, access to networks, and use of facilities, Portfolio Companies will now gain access to IBM products and programs designed to help emerging businesses. The relationship makes IBM a preferred provider of information technology and services for TEKSA and TEKSA Portfolio Companies, and will provide IBM access to new business opportunities in Life Sciences and convergent technologies.

"IBM's Incubator Series provides these startup companies with the business and IT infrastructure support highly needed for their development and growth," said David Albanese, senior NetGen business development specialist. "Our relationship with TEKSA will help us expand our business opportunities with emerging markets in the Southwest, such as Life Sciences."

TEKSA has been built on a foundation of partnerships with the community and with nonprofit institutions, and is forming strategic relationships with leading technology companies to ensure their startups are well connected, have enhanced sales channels and access to the best technology.

BIO-Defense and Homeland Security Procurement Conference and Expo

Dr. Mary Pat Moyer, President and CEO of TEKSA Innovations Corp. and CEO and Chief Science Officer of INCELL Corportation traveled to Washington D.C. for the Biotechnology Industry Organization's (BIO) BIO-defense Expo held on April 30, 2002. Dr. Moyer represented both TEKSA and INCELL as well as all of TEKSA's Portfolio Companies with a trade show booth and marketing materials at the one-day government procurement conference.

TEKSA Innovations was a sponsor for the first-ever San Antonio-Austin Regional BioDefense Summit in New Braunfels, Texas on April 12, 2002. The program was hosted by San Antonio-Austin Life Sciences Association (SALSA) and brought together members of academia, political leaders, emergency response teams, and public and private companies. Panels throughout the day included discussions on convergent technologies, medical community preparedness, detection and testing capabilities, and city, state, and national initiatives and actions. The keynote luncheon speaker was Commissioner David Dewhurst, who is also the head of the Governor's Homeland Security Task Force.

TEKSA Office Relocation

TEKSA Innovations has moved from the San Antonio Technology Center. Currently, Portfolio Companies can utilize the laboratory, office, and conference space at the Network Boulevard site while TEKSA seeks a second location.
